What the numbers mean
We source our velvet from a northern Italian mill known for dense, resilient pile. The base is a 95% polyester and 5% elastane blend that offers the weight and drape of traditional velvet while maintaining shape through repeated wear.
The pile depth measures 3mm, creating rich color saturation without feeling heavy or stiff. Unlike lighter-weight velours, this fabric holds its structure through sitting and movement, and the stretch content prevents bagging at the knees or elbows.
The August Sky velvet dress runs true to our standard sizing. We recommend your usual size for a fitted bodice and relaxed skirt.
The bust and waist are tailored with princess seams that follow the body’s natural contours. If you typically size up for comfort in structured pieces, we suggest staying with your usual size here—the stretch velvet provides flexibility without requiring extra room.
Professional dry cleaning is the only recommended method for this velvet dress. Home washing will mat the pile and distort the fabric’s body.
Between cleanings, steam the dress on a hanger to refresh the pile and release wrinkles. Hold the steamer wand 6 inches away and move continuously—direct contact will flatten the velvet texture.

Styling versatility
The August Sky velvet dress transitions easily from daytime events to evening occasions. For office settings or afternoon gatherings, pair it with low heels and minimal jewelry—the velvet provides enough visual interest without additional embellishment.
Evening styling works well with statement earrings and strappy sandals. The solid colors we offer serve as a neutral backdrop for metallic accessories or bold color pops. A structured blazer in wool or tweed adds polish for cooler weather, and the midi length works with both ankle boots and knee-high styles.

Questions about the August Sky velvet dress
The dress is best suited for fall and winter events due to velvet’s insulating properties. The sleeveless cut and breathable lining prevent overheating indoors, but the fabric weight makes it less ideal for warm outdoor summer settings. Spring evening events work well depending on your climate.
Our stretch velvet has the same luxurious pile and visual depth as traditional cotton velvet, but the 5% elastane content adds flexibility and shape retention. You get the elegant drape without stiffness, and the fabric recovers after sitting or movement rather than developing permanent creases.
We recommend seamless undergarments in a neutral tone close to your skin color. The velvet texture helps camouflage lines, but the fitted bodice shows panty lines if you wear traditional cotton underwear. A slip or shapewear is not necessary due to the full lining.
The invisible zipper extends from mid-back to just below the shoulder blades. Most customers can reach it independently, though having assistance makes it easier. The hook-and-eye closure at the top secures comfortably once the zipper is closed.
Steam the dress on a hanger using a handheld steamer held 6 inches away from the fabric. Move continuously and avoid direct contact with the velvet pile. Most wrinkles release within minutes. Never iron velvet directly, as heat flattens the pile permanently.
Professional tailors can hem velvet, but it requires specialized techniques to preserve the pile direction and prevent crushing. Bring the dress to a tailor experienced with velvet or luxury fabrics. Simple hemming typically costs between thirty and fifty dollars depending on your location.
We currently offer the dress in sizes XS through XL. Our size XL accommodates up to a 42-inch bust and 34-inch waist. We are working on expanding our size range and expect to offer sizes XXL and 1X by next season.
