August Sky Women’s Smocked Bodice Maxi Dress
We designed this smocked bodice maxi dress for women who want ease without sacrificing polish. The elasticized bodice stretches to fit comfortably through the bust and ribcage, then releases into a flowing skirt that moves with you. We built it from a soft woven rayon blend that drapes beautifully and breathes in warm weather.
Our design team focused on versatility — wear it barefoot on the beach, with sandals for weekend errands, or dress it up with heels and a statement necklace for dinner. The adjustable tie straps let you customize the fit, and the side pockets add function to the feminine silhouette. We’ve offered this style in our studio since 2019, and it remains one of our best-loved pieces season after season.

What the numbers mean
We chose a rayon-viscose blend for the August Sky women’s smocked bodice maxi dress because it offers the best combination of drape, breathability, and easy care. The fabric is a 95% rayon, 5% spandex weave that feels soft against skin and resists wrinkling during wear. Rayon fibers are derived from natural cellulose, giving the dress a silk-like hand without the delicate care requirements.
Machine wash the dress on a cold delicate cycle with like colors. We recommend using a mesh laundry bag to protect the smocked bodice elastic during the wash. Hang to dry or tumble on low heat — avoid high heat, which can relax the elastic shirring over time. A quick steam or low iron on the reverse side refreshes the skirt if needed after storage.
The smocked bodice is designed to stretch and conform to your shape, making this dress forgiving across a range of bust and ribcage measurements. We size the dress based on your usual letter size — if you typically wear a medium in our tops, the medium will fit you here. The elastic shirring provides about two inches of stretch in each direction through the bodice.
Length & proportions
The maxi skirt measures approximately 50 inches from the bottom edge of the smocked bodice to the hem on a size medium. Petite customers (5’3″ and under) may want to hem the skirt or wear with heels to avoid excess fabric pooling at the floor. Taller customers (5’9″ and above) will see the hem hit closer to ankle length, which many prefer for everyday wear. The tie straps are adjustable up to four inches, so you can raise or lower the bodice to suit your torso length.
We see customers wear this dress across more occasions than almost any other piece in our line. The smocked bodice and flowing skirt strike a balance between casual and elevated that translates well from day to evening. Pair it with flat sandals and a straw tote for farmers market mornings, then swap in wedges and gold jewelry for a backyard wedding.
The neutral color palette in our current collection — ivory, black, terracotta, and sage — layers easily with denim jackets, linen blazers, and lightweight cardigans when temperatures drop. Many of the silhouettes across our maxi dress collection share this same approach to relaxed elegance, giving you multiple options that work together in a capsule wardrobe. In cooler months, customers tell us they wear the dress over fitted long-sleeve tees or turtlenecks with ankle boots for a boho-transitional look.

Design details that matter
Smocked construction
We use a traditional shirring technique to create the smocked bodice — multiple rows of elastic thread stitched through the fabric in parallel lines. This method distributes tension evenly, so the dress hugs your body without binding or digging in. The elastic maintains its recovery even after repeated washing, which is why we’ve stuck with this construction since our first season.
Functional pockets
The side seam pockets are deep enough to hold a phone, keys, and lip balm — essentials for running errands without a bag. We set the pocket openings slightly forward of the side seam so your hand reaches them naturally, and we reinforce the opening with a double-stitched bar tack to prevent tearing over time. Small details like these extend the life of the dress and make it genuinely useful in daily wear.

What the crews say

Your smocked bodice maxi dress questions answered
The smocked bodice stretches approximately two inches in each direction from its resting measurement, accommodating fluctuation in bust and ribcage size. The elastic shirring uses multiple rows of elastic thread that recover after stretching, so the fit remains consistent even after repeated wear and washing. If you’re between sizes or have a larger bust, we recommend sizing up for the most comfortable fit through the bodice.
Yes, the dress works with several bra options depending on your preference and support needs. Many customers wear a strapless or bandeau bra beneath the smocked bodice. The adjustable tie straps also accommodate regular bra straps if you tie them at a width that aligns with your bra. For lighter support, some customers prefer a stick-on bra or simply go without, since the smocked elastic provides some hold on its own.
The dress measures approximately 50 inches from the bottom of the smocked bodice to the hem on a size medium. This measurement is taken with the tie straps adjusted to a medium length. Keep in mind that your torso length and where you position the bodice will affect where the hem falls on your body. Most customers between 5’4″ and 5’8″ find the hem reaches the floor or just above when wearing flat shoes.
The rayon-viscose blend we use is a medium-weight weave that is not sheer in most lighting. However, in very bright sunlight or when backlit, lighter colors like ivory may show a faint silhouette. We recommend wearing nude-toned undergarments with lighter shades if you’re concerned about visibility. Darker colors like black and terracotta are fully opaque in all lighting conditions.
Wash the dress in cold water on a delicate cycle and avoid high heat in the dryer, as heat relaxes elastic fibers over time. We suggest air drying or using low tumble heat. Store the dress hanging rather than folded to prevent creasing the smocked bodice. With proper care, the elastic shirring should maintain its recovery for years of wear. If the elastic does eventually relax, a tailor can replace the elastic thread to restore the original fit.
The tie straps are fully adjustable — you can shorten them by tying a tighter knot or bow at the shoulder. If you need a more permanent solution, you can trim the excess strap length and finish the raw edge with a simple fold-and-stitch hem. Many petite customers trim one to two inches from each strap to achieve their ideal fit. The straps are a simple woven ribbon construction, so alterations are straightforward even for beginner sewers.
The rayon blend resists wrinkling better than cotton or linen, but it will crease if packed tightly in a suitcase. We recommend rolling the dress rather than folding it, or using a garment bag if you’re checking luggage. If wrinkles do occur, hang the dress in a steamy bathroom for ten minutes or give it a quick press with a low-heat iron on the reverse side. The fabric smooths out easily without much effort.
